Proven Protocols, Tracked Outcomes

Houston Mind & Brain offers cognitive testing for adults to help clarify concerns with attention (including ADHD), memory, and thinking. Testing can identify strengths and weaknesses that affect daily functioning and provide a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Results offer an objective baseline, help guide diagnosis, and inform treatment decisions—whether that includes medication, psychotherapy, or other options. Initial testing is completed in-office to ensure accuracy, with repeat or follow-up testing available at home when appropriate. Findings are interpreted within the context of your overall clinical picture.

Important Note: Our cognitive testing is designed to guide diagnosis and treatment planning. We do not provide the extended documentation typically required for academic or standardized testing accommodations (e.g., school or board exams). If you need evaluation specifically for accommodations, we can provide referrals to specialists who offer this type of comprehensive testing.

What is Cognitive Testing?

Cognitive testing uses validated, standardized assessments to measure areas such as attention, working memory, processing speed, executive function, and learning and recall. At Houston Mind & Brain, we use modern, reliable tools—including Creyos and Qb testing—to create a clear, easy-to-understand profile of your cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Results are reviewed with you and interpreted within the context of your overall clinical picture to guide next steps in care.

Who benefits from Cognitive Testing?

Concerns about memory, thinking, or “brain fog”, especially when these interfere with work or relationships

Problems with concentration, attention, impulsivity, or suspected ADHD

Cognitive changes after medical illness, concussion, or COVID-19

A need for a baseline before starting treatments that can affect cognition (for example, some procedural or medication treatments), or for measuring change during treatments such as TMS for traumatic brain injuries

Difficulty deciding between medical, behavioral, or rehabilitative approaches - testing helps guide the best choice.

Tests We Offer

Creyos Cognitive Testing

ADHD Evaluation & Objective Testing (Creyos & QbCheck)

Sessions last ~3 - 20 minutes (depending on protocol)

Scheduled on weekdays over several weeks

Many patients begin noticing changes within 2–4 weeks, with benefits building over time

You can relax, read, or watch TV during treatment for depression

We also offer Accelerated TMS for patients seeking a condensed treatment schedule.

The Testing Process, Simple & Supportive

The process begins with a comprehensive psychiatric consultation, similar to a standard 60-minute evaluation. This allows us to understand your history, current symptoms, and goals in detail.

For patients with concerns about attention, memory, or thinking, it is important to first consider and rule out other conditions that can affect cognitive function. These may include mood and anxiety disorders, sleep issues, or other medical factors that can mimic or contribute to difficulties with focus or memory.

When appropriate, additional evaluation—such as laboratory testing—may be recommended to help identify or rule out underlying medical contributors.

Psychiatric Consultation

Initial testing is completed in-office under supervision by trained staff to ensure accurate administration and allow for clinical observation. When appropriate, follow-up or repeat testing may be completed at home for convenience.

Test Administration

Testing is scored automatically using validated systems, and your provider reviews and interprets the results in the context of your history, symptoms, and treatment goals. When helpful, we may consult with the developers of these assessments to support interpretation.

Scoring & Clinician Review

You’ll meet with your provider to review your results and discuss next steps. This includes a clear explanation of findings and personalized recommendations, which may involve treatment options, referrals, or additional evaluation.

Results are used to guide decisions around medication, psychotherapy, and, when appropriate, procedural treatments such as TMS (for example, in cases of traumatic brain injury). If medication is recommended, your provider may review prior lab work or order additional testing (such as an EKG) to ensure safe and appropriate treatment.

Feedback & Recommendations

How Results are Used

Diagnosis & differential: clarify whether attention or cognitive problems reflect ADHD, depression, medication effects, sleep problems, or another medical cause.

Treatment planning: guide medication choices, psychotherapy focus, cognitive rehabilitation, or timing and candidacy for procedural treatments (e.g., using a baseline before TMS).

Monitoring: provide objective measures to track improvement or side effects over time - useful after medication changes, therapy, or neuromodulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does cognitive testing take?

Testing sessions vary by battery but typically last between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the package. We’ll give you an estimate when scheduling.

  • Who reviews and interprets my cognitive testing results?

A qualified clinician on our team reviews the scores and writes the report; we discuss results with you and make treatment recommendations. If you need a full neuropsychological evaluation by a neuropsychologist, we’ll coordinate referrals

  • Will testing affect my TMS, Spravato, or ketamine plan?

Yes - cognitive testing can help determine baseline cognitive function, identify issues needing stabilization, and guide sequencing with procedural treatments. We routinely integrate testing findings into broader treatment planning.

  • Can children be tested for ADHD?

Our testing services are primarily focused on adults. For children or adolescents, we’re happy to discuss options and provide referrals to specialists who offer pediatric evaluations.

  • Do I need cognitive testing for ADHD?

Cognitive testing is typically included as part of our ADHD evaluations. While ADHD is a clinical diagnosis, testing provides objective data that helps clarify attention and executive functioning and guides more precise treatment planning.

  • I’ve seen ADHD symptoms on social media—does that mean I have ADHD?

Social media has helped many people better recognize and understand symptoms like difficulty focusing, procrastination, or feeling overwhelmed. It’s common to relate to these experiences—but similar symptoms can have different underlying causes, including anxiety, depression, stress, or sleep issues.

ADHD is a clinical diagnosis that requires a careful, individualized evaluation of your history, symptom patterns, and functioning over time. Our goal is not just to label symptoms, but to understand what’s driving them so we can recommend the most effective and appropriate treatment.

I have greatly benefited from the services of Houston Mind & Brain. I would encourage anyone seeking neurological or psychiatric treatment to visit them. I have particularly benefited most from their TMS treatment. It has changed my life for the better in so many ways. They have knowledgeable and friendly staff and providers who really do care about your health and because they are a smaller office you really do get that personal connection with the providers and staff. Highly recommend!

We Accept Insurance and Make Care Affordable

We accept most major plans for FDA-cleared treatments (including standard TMS and Spravato). We verify benefits, manage prior authorization, and provide a written estimate before treatment so there are no surprises.

  • Do you accept Medicaid?

No - we accept Medicare but do not accept Medicaid. If you have questions about coverage, call our team and we’ll help.

  • Will my insurance cover TMS?

Many commercial plans cover standard TMS when medical-necessity criteria are met. Accelerated/fast-track TMS is often self-pay. We verify benefits and submit prior authorization on your behalf.

  • What if I’m out of network?

This is uncommon because we are credentialed with most plans. If needed, we can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

  • How do I get a written estimate?

Request a free 20-minute expert call. We’ll run a benefits check, explain likely coverage, and send a written estimate of patient responsibility before any treatment.

  • Can I get sliding scale pricing for TMS?

Yes. We offer sliding scale pricing for eligible patients and can provide a written cost estimate before treatment. To be considered, we’ll ask for proof of income, such as tax documents.

At this time, sliding scale pricing is not available for Medicare patients or for accelerated TMS protocols.
