TMS, Ketamine & Therapy, Coordinated Into One Plan

Proven Protocols, Tracked Outcomes

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) pairs a medically supervised ketamine administration with structured psychotherapy, allowing patients to use periods of increased neuroplasticity to process emotions and build new ways of coping.

At Houston Mind & Brain, KAP is delivered through a coordinated, team-based program that emphasizes safety, clinical expertise, and individualized care.

Dr. Cho Explains KAP

Why KAP?

Rapid symptom relief. Ketamine frequently reduces depressive symptoms, suicidal thinking, and severe distress within hours to days — creating a therapeutic window for meaningful psychotherapy.

Deeper, more durable change. Structured integration therapy helps turn medication-related experiences into lasting psychological and behavioral gains.

Individualized care. KAP at HMB is planned by a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist together so medical dosing and psychotherapeutic aims align with your goals.

Who May KAP Help?

Have treatment-resistant depression or limited response to conventional medications or psychotherapy.

Struggle with trauma-related symptoms or entrenched avoidance patterns that benefit from guided experiential processing.

Want a combined medication + psychotherapy approach where the medication’s effects are intentionally integrated into therapy.

How KAP Works

A clinician reviews your history, current medications, medical status, and goals. Safety screening, informed consent, and a personalized plan are completed before any dosing. We coordinate with your prescribers and therapists as needed.

Comprehensive medical & psychiatric evaluation

Before dosing, you meet with a psychotherapist to set intentions, develop coping strategies, and prepare for the altered state. Preparation optimizes safety and therapeutic value.

Preparation psychotherapy

Ketamine is administered in a controlled clinical setting under clinician supervision using structured protocols. Patients are continuously monitored during and after dosing, including vital signs and mental status. All dosing occurs in-clinic.

In-clinic dosing

After observation, a psychotherapy session focuses on processing experiences and translating insights into practical changes. Integration may be in-person or by telehealth, depending on clinical needs and timing. Multiple integration sessions are often scheduled.

Integrated psychotherapy

We track outcomes, refine goals, and decide on further KAP sessions, maintenance dosing, or additional psychotherapy. KAP is a program (not a single visit) and we tailor frequency and duration to your response.

How KAP Differs From Spravato / Ketamine Alone

Spravato and ketamine on their own are primarily used to reduce symptoms—often quickly and effectively. In KAP, ketamine is intentionally combined with psychotherapy so that the period of increased neuroplasticity is used to process emotions, gain insight, and build more durable changes.

In other words, while medication alone can provide relief, KAP is designed to help translate that relief into longer-term psychological and behavioral change.

Cost & Insurance

We verify benefits and pursue prior authorization where needed. Coverage for ketamine protocols varies by plan; Spravato is commonly covered when clinical criteria are met.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is KAP safe?

When delivered in a clinic with medical and psychotherapeutic oversight, KAP is provided with multiple safety layers: medical screening, supervised dosing, observation, and trained psychotherapists. We will discuss specific risks and your medical history in the evaluation.

  • How quickly will I improve?

Some patients notice symptom relief within hours to days of dosing; lasting benefit typically requires several sessions plus integration therapy. Individual responses vary.

  • Will my insurance cover KAP?

Coverage varies. Spravato is often covered when criteria are met, but racemic ketamine and KAP are frequently not covered or may be reimbursed differently depending on your plan. We verify your benefits, explain expected costs, and provide written estimates before treatment.

  • Can I combine KAP with other treatments?

Yes - KAP can be part of an integrated plan alongside medication management, TMS, or other therapies where clinically appropriate. We coordinate sequencing and monitoring across the team.

  • What if I already have a therapist outside of HMB?

We’re happy to work with your existing therapist. If you already have a therapist you trust, we can coordinate care and, when appropriate, collaborate around ketamine to support continuity and the best possible outcomes.

I have greatly benefited from the services of Houston Mind & Brain. I would encourage anyone seeking neurological or psychiatric treatment to visit them. I have particularly benefited most from their TMS treatment. It has changed my life for the better in so many ways. They have knowledgeable and friendly staff and providers who really do care about your health and because they are a smaller office you really do get that personal connection with the providers and staff. Highly recommend!

We Accept Insurance and Make Care Affordable

We accept most major plans for FDA-cleared treatments (including standard TMS and Spravato). We verify benefits, manage prior authorization, and provide a written estimate before treatment so there are no surprises.

  • Do you accept Medicaid?

No - we accept Medicare but do not accept Medicaid. If you have questions about coverage, call our team and we’ll help.

  • Will my insurance cover TMS?

Many commercial plans cover standard TMS when medical-necessity criteria are met. Accelerated/fast-track TMS is often self-pay. We verify benefits and submit prior authorization on your behalf.

  • What if I’m out of network?

This is uncommon because we are credentialed with most plans. If needed, we can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

  • How do I get a written estimate?

Request a free 20-minute expert call. We’ll run a benefits check, explain likely coverage, and send a written estimate of patient responsibility before any treatment.

  • Can I get sliding scale pricing for TMS?

Yes. We offer sliding scale pricing for eligible patients and can provide a written cost estimate before treatment. To be considered, we’ll ask for proof of income, such as tax documents.

At this time, sliding scale pricing is not available for Medicare patients or for accelerated TMS protocols.
